How to Convert Film Negatives to Positives

You shot a roll, developed it, and scanned it — and now you're staring at a folder of orange, inverted frames. Turning those negatives into natural-looking positives is its own small craft. Here's what's actually happening, and how to do it whether you want full manual control or a one-click result.
What "converting a negative" really means
A film negative stores the image with its tones reversed — dark where the scene was bright — and, for colour film, behind a distinctive orange mask baked into the film base. Converting it to a positive means three things happen together:
- Inversion — flipping the tones so light becomes light again.
- Orange-mask removal — neutralising the orange base so colours read correctly.
- Colour balancing — setting a sensible white point and contrast so skin tones and skies look right.
Get those three right and you have a finished frame. Get them slightly wrong and you get the muddy, cyan-or-magenta cast that trips up most first attempts.
Step 01Digitise the negative
Before you can convert anything, the negative has to be a digital file. Three common routes:
Flatbed scanner
Convenient and cheap for whole strips, but usually the softest option. Scan flat, with the film holder, and turn off the scanner software's own auto-inversion if you plan to convert later.
Dedicated film scanner
Sharper, higher-resolution results built specifically for film. Slower per frame, but the gold standard for detail.
Camera scanning (DSLR/mirrorless)
Photographing the negative on a light table with a digital camera and a macro lens — "camera scanning" or "DSLR scanning" — is fast, high-resolution and increasingly popular. Shoot in RAW, keep the light source even, and expose so the brightest part of the film base isn't clipped.
Whichever you use, the goal is the same: a clean, evenly lit capture of the frame with a little of the film border visible.
Step 02Invert and remove the orange mask
This is the heart of the conversion. Doing it by hand in Lightroom or Photoshop usually means:
- Inverting the tone curve (or the RGB channels).
- Sampling the clear film base to neutralise the orange mask.
- Adjusting each channel's black and white points so the colours land naturally.
It's very doable, but it's fiddly, and the settings that work for one frame rarely carry perfectly to the next because exposure and lighting drift across a roll. This is the step people spend the most time on — and the step dedicated tools exist to automate.
Step 03Set white balance and contrast
With the mask removed, fine-tune the white balance so neutrals are neutral, then set contrast to taste. Colour negative film is forgiving here; small moves make a big difference to how "true to film" the result feels.
Step 04Crop and straighten
Finally, crop to the frame edges and straighten the horizon. If you scanned whole strips, this also means separating the individual frames — tedious by hand, especially when the strip sits slightly crooked in the holder.

Without an orange mask or colour channels to balance, converting a black-and-white negative is mostly inversion plus a tone curve. It's the easiest film to convert by hand — but you still have the per-frame cropping and straightening to deal with across a roll.
Converting a whole roll at once
The single biggest time sink is repetition. Thirty-six frames means thirty-six inversions, thirty-six white balances, thirty-six crops. Batch conversion — applying the conversion across an entire roll and letting the software find and straighten each frame — turns an evening of sliders into a few minutes of review.
A few tips for cleaner conversions
- Keep a sliver of the clear film base in the scan — it's the reference for neutralising the orange mask.
- Expose your scans consistently so a roll converts uniformly.
- Work from RAW or 16-bit files where you can; there's more headroom for the big inversion move.
- Dust the negatives before scanning — spotting is far slower than prevention.
